Of course many villagers won't have ready access to the
water coolant.
A lager, elevated top would boost effectiveness. (picture an upside-down top hat) A thicker top would increase insulation. Having it cover the entire surface would prevent the sun from heating the sand. Also, elevating the outer edge would still allow for effective evaporation.
