Disposing of old subway cars in the ocean creates habitats for marine life and supports recreational fishing. New York City Transit has provided more than 2,500 retired subway cars to several states along the east coast of the U.S.A. Before the cars are 'buried' at sea, they are stripped of potential environmental contaminants and then steam-cleaned.

Well isn't that nice, America is soooo rich they can give little fishes a home, so I guess unlike here in the U.K. they don't have the problems of homeless people that we do.
Here, (in the U.K.) I'm betting that their are many people who would be so happy to have the use of a disused railway carriage to live in and there is plenty of unused track to put them on.
It's nice to know that the U.S. don't have any homeless and they are giving the little fishes some where nice to live..... um just why do the little fishes need a home anyway ? What has the U.S. done to thier homes in the first place?
I had the same reaction as ari.rox!
Let the subway cars be used as housing for homeless folks!
They can be insulated with all kinds of readily available construction waste materials for with living systems and then occupied above ground.
The fish are not gaining by this addition to the oceans eco-systems.
yes, I am an american, and I would love to live in an old subway car, especially if it was steam cleaned and the toxins were removed, I would have to buy a piece of land to put it on, and that would be a trick for me, if anyone has one...
think one of the reasons why they are using the old subway cars this way is due the declining state of the coral reefs around the world. If we loose the reefs it will have a dramatic effect on our own ecosystem.
this might help explain better then I can :)

Is MTA crazy? If countries around the world did this with their old buses, trucks and subway cars our oceans would be full of these metallic bodies. I thought that scrap metal from these cars are re-used for building new cars. Well, isn't this a revelation. And how exactly is this an eco-idea? As if these sea creatures need shelter in the ocean
Odd use of materials that could be reused/recycled. I think the greatest risk to coral reefs is increased acidity from pollution and increase in seawater temperature. Likewise, the greatest threat to fish is pollution and overfishing. Not lack of habitat. I'm sure quite a few seabed dwellers are killed every time one of those carriages is dumped. And dumped would seem to be the appropriate word. I wonder how much the transport system saves by not having to pay taxes on this stuff?
i suppose it makes up for hammering the coral, not quite as pretty though
This basically just looks like an excuse to dump stuff in the sea...call me a cynic...
in other words...Green Wash!
surely the worlds metal resources cannot be wasted like this how the hell are we supposed to make new carrages if the materials to be sustainably recycled and re used are on the ocean floor, no brainer, green wash political subtefuge b.s.
Today Americans think its right and if tomorrow if it is proven wrong can America take back these scraps back from sea, is it so easy. I SUPPORT RECYCLING
فكرة كويسة
If they go to all that trouble-strip/clean/detox-then why
not recycle metals? But then....recently some worthies
cleared loads of junk(tyres,bikes,s-mart trolleys, plastic crates etc)from a local river, because the fish and wildlife were so plentiful. So I did just
wonder if there is a positive habitat connection.....?
If you think this has no benefit to sealife, you obviously have no knowledge on the subject. As far as the homeless, this would not be cost effective. Scrap or not insulating them would be too costly. There has to an efficient way to heat and cool also. Then they need somewhere to be placed. Which would need electricity, security, transportation, ect. Not so simple. Its easy for the simple minded to dismiss ideas that are not their own without any forethought beyond their initial reaction.
